In this project, we were given the choice to redesign a book cover for a novel we are familiar with, and I chose Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami. I read this novel when I was in college, and even though that was a long time ago, I can still remember its themes pretty well. I wanted to create a cover that captures its emotional depth and intricate themes. My design for the Norwegian Wood book cover aims to visually convey the novel’s emotional landscape through imagery.

The front cover features an image of a woman with a rose concealing one eye. This imagery reflects the character Naoko’s fragile and enigmatic façade. The rose symbolizes beauty and love, yet its placement over her eye suggests a hidden sadness and the complexities of her emotional state. On the back cover, the rose appears wilted, symbolizing Naoko’s inner turmoil and the deterioration of her mental state. This contrast between the front and back covers highlights the duality of her character—her outward appearance versus her internal struggles. This design approach adds depth and resonance to the reader's experience.

I was tasked with creating a visually compelling and informative magazine cover design that effectively communicates the issue’s contents, captures the attention of potential readers, and reflects the brand identity of Rolling Stone Magazine. For the cover subject, I chose Weyes Blood, one of my favorite musicians, who has yet to be featured on the magazine's cover. This choice highlights her impact on modern music but also introduces her to a wider audience.

I chose this specific color scheme to complement Weyes Blood’s ethereal and mystical persona. Soft purples and blues create a dreamy, almost surreal atmosphere that mirrors the mood of her music. The contrasting pink text for "Weyes Blood" adds a focal point, drawing the reader's attention to the main feature.
